Bite-Size Taiwanese: Newbie

Bite-Size Taiwanese: Newbie

english

Bite-size Taiwanese is a podcast giving you a taste of real, everyday Taiwanese. Co-hosts Phil & Alan guide you through the ins and outs of the Taiwanese language (Southern Min/Hokkien) with light-hearted, fun (and occasionally funny) conversations on how it’s used in Taiwan.

The Newbie podcast is geared towards newcomers to this language and will handily equip visitors with basic survival Taiwanese skills. This show ran from 2019-2020, but listeners can use it to learn Taiwanese any time.

Other levels include Elementary and Pronounce it like a Pro.

Co-Hosts:

Phil Lin - Phil hopes to share his excitement for learning Taiwanese with new audiences around the world. While he grew up in small-town, Midwestern America, he eventually found himself living in Taiwan rediscovering the language he was fascinated by in his youth. His first exploration of Taiwanese resulted in the publication of Taiwanese Grammar: A Concise Reference, and now Bite-size Taiwanese is his next step to provide accessible, in-depth English-based materials to learn Taiwanese.

Phín-tsì Kí - Born and raised in Taiwan, Phín-tsì grew up speaking Taiwanese and Mandarin. He later added English and Italian to his repertoire, as well as a Master’s degree in Linguistics and certificates in language teaching, translation and interpretation. Juggling different language projects has become part of his daily life. His most recent challenges include studying medical terminology (for work) and practicing Hoiliuk Hakka (for fun).

Alan Chen - On any given day, you may see Alan running around Taipei teaching languages or doing voice over work. This former champion of a national Taiwanese Recitation competition joined the Bite-size Taiwanese team as both a co-host and audio editor. When he’s not busy with endlessly editing audio, you can find him leather crafting, obsessing over local Taiwanese food, or struggling with his fluffy pet Pomeranian, Neo.
